Ever feel like you're trapped in a box and can't get out? I've always gotten this feeling every now and again, that maybe the fact that we've created such rigid societies is a negative thing. I'm all for getting along and learning and stuff, but going through our day-to-day rituals and driving off to school so that we can make more money so that we can eventually survive sometimes seems crazy. Humans are such intelligent beings, so why do we spend 80% of our lives doing things we don't even want to do?
It's a conundrum that can't be solved, but I think it's worth contemplating anyway.
What are some ways you use to get over the feeling, if you ever get it?

I think that I feel trapped like that whenever I want to change something in my life. When things are the same every day and I try to change it. We try to be like everyone else and fall in the trap of the society. Change is hard, but it is a good thing to do.

the way i see it is if u really dont wanna do something just dont maybe i dont get it cos ive never really felt that way but then i tend not to care wat other ppl think and just do wat i want
I can see wat u mean dont get me wrong i wonder about it too but then im on the other side why do ppl bother with uncomfortable fashions and personal image just to fit in? i dress just to be comfortable and if that means not doin my hair and wearing my ug boots into the city so be it its probably more fun just to see other ppl expressions anyway

Well that's not really what I'm talking about. I mean, it is a little, but not quite. The bigger picture is that I would like humanity to break free from government, from having to go to work every day, from having to go to college so you can get a career. We spend 90% of our lives doing what we really don't want to do just so we can make it in life. But what if all of the people decided to ban together so that we didn't need things like laws and government.
Obviously, that's not going to happen. But for those of us who can envision a world like that it makes it very painful.

Basicaly, we go to work to earn money but also to provide the things we need, like food, water, energy, transportation. Even the internet that is provided to us is a resault of long hours of work. But it's true that after all that work, we end up having from 3 to 5 hours for ourselfs (not including the time we need to go to work/school).

ah so lucys not just looking at the big picture shes looking at the epicly huge one lol sure itd be good to live in a kind of nirvana where everything was as u wanted unfortunately lifes like the old saying - u put nothing in u get nothing out if everyone quit their jobs who would farm the food so we could eat?
as maidens says u work to get money to live u just gotta make sure at the end of the day u actually do some living and u arent just a slave to money

Yeah, but I also understand what Lucy wants to say... I mean, we work 8 hours a day (if we are lucky, I mean there are others that work even 10 or 12 hours a shift).and we end up aging without enjoying life and that is not fair either. There are many times when we are at work doing nothing... That means loosing time. Man, if I had a shop or something, I would buy this huge apartment and I would split it in half: one part for the shop, and the other part for my house, And I would make this hallway at the entrance and with some sort of a buzzer or something at the door, so that if I am in the home half, I know someone got in or out (and be able to disable it if someone else is attending the shop, like an employee, or my boyfriend...). So if my shop would not be busy, or at some certain hours it would be empty, I could just go 'home; and sit on the sofa and watch tv, or cook or something else. Or better, take something with me at the shop, you know, something to do. Wouldn't that be convenient? And I would also leave a phone number out, so if I do not want to open the shop, or if it's a holiday and somebody desperately needs your services, you can open the shop for them, just for that person, or just talk to that person and agree on a certain hour to meet there. Isn't flexible program a great idea? I say this because many shops are not open when I a free from work. And the shop keepers are really bored sometimes staying there.

Well, again, viewing beyond the simple ideas of people needing to be worked to death in order for everyone to go on is what I'm getting at. What if everyone farmed their OWN food? Or we broke society down into those things that people wanted to do. So if someone wanted to be a doctor, they would study to be that, without having to come up with a bunch of pieces of paper that they exchange for an education. You know?
Yes, it means bringing society back to a more primitive level but I think that's what we need. We have lost touch with human beings. Most people don't speak directly to others more than they text them on a little handheld gadget. What happened to receiving letters in the mail, or calling someone up and actually TALKING to them? Instead, most people just clink away at their little buttons and don't spend time really talking. That's why I refuse to text-message anyone. My cell phone is never on because I only make outgoing calls with it, and I have NEVER in my life sent a text. I refuse. If I want to talk to somebody I will talk to them. With words. My own voice.
I have to be thankful for the internet because it allows me to speak to people around the world. I have no choice to speak to people on forums in text. But really, if I had all of your phone numbers and long-distance wasn't so expensive (money again!) I would personally call you all.
It just seems so stupid, not to mention depressing, that our lives are ruled by PIECES OF PAPER!

yeah i see wat u mean with ppl losing touch with themselves people who spend their whole lives working towards that next promotion or trying to get enuf money to buy that new house or new car then all of a sudden they are 60 and are forced to retire and realise they have nothing, cos they didnt spend time actually living and making memories
sure the world would be a 'purer' place if everyone was self sustained farming their own food, making their own clothes fixing everything themselves but then who is goin to teach everyone to do all this? and arent they gonna want some kind of payment for doin so?
sure it'd be nice in a nostalgic sort of way to be able to go back in time and live like that but the fact is we did live like that all those decades ago, then we evolved there are good and bad points to every society, but its ur outlook on it that effects it the most i dont feel like my life is ruled by anything, i work to get money for things i enjoy, to make my life more fun im not ruled by my bills and payments, im thankful that theres someone out there who supplys those things call me selfish but i wouldnt trade my high-tech life for anything

I think I'd love to grow my own food, even if I do not know a lot about growing vegetables and I am afraid of bugs, but I really want to point out something... The risk of growing your own food is the weather. I mean, sure, if it does not rain, you have to go water the plants. But what do you do if there is too much rain? Like right now in the eastern part of my country, where my bf's parents live. They cannot go plant seeds because it's been raining for a week. That life is hard too. Also, besides growing food, we should grow animals too. That would take up all day. I love your ideea but it is hard to b braught to life. Maybe they should make ppl work for 5 hours instead of 8 and have more time for themselfs. But ppl should also be educated to spend their time in other ways than watching tv, playing pc or video games, or other unhealthy ways.
I am a very strange persom when it comes to comunication. I dislike talking on the phone, I hate being called the most. I love cell phoes because at least I can see who calls me and I can make up an excuse about not picking up if I am not in the mood to talk to that person. I hate calling ppl because I am always under the impresion that I am disturbing them. At least when I use messenger or forums I know there is no way I can disturb someone.

Well, I mean moving beyond all of that. I'm sure we can be happy enough because we have internet and cell phones and stuff. But a society that can go on with their lives and still ignore those people who are starving in our own and other countries is a sad society indeed. Where did the humanity go? I know it might sound old and cliched, but really, we have lost touch with our own humanity. And that's the bottom line.

I know. At the radio they said now much food English ppl (from Great Britain) throw out / year... And I was thinking of those that live in Africa and barely have clean water to drink and stuff... I dislike throwing out food myself and try to avoid it as much as possible. I only trow food if it is expired but I try to eat it before that or at least feed the cat with it if I do not want to eat it.
